VA Community Care in Marion County, MS

Veterans in Marion County have earned more than gratitude—they have earned access to timely, high‑quality care. Yet for many rural veterans, reaching a VA Medical Center or specialty clinic can mean long drives, limited transportation options, and delayed treatment. The VA Community Care Program helps close this gap by allowing eligible veterans to receive care from approved local providers when VA services are too far away, unavailable, or unable to meet timely‑care standards. For veterans living in Columbia, Foxworth, Sandy Hook, and surrounding communities, Community Care is often the most practical pathway to consistent healthcare, supportive services, and long‑term stability.

What Is VA Community Care?

VA Community Care allows veterans to receive medical, behavioral health, residential, and supportive services from community providers when certain conditions are met, including:

  • The VA cannot provide the service needed
  • The nearest VA facility is too far or difficult to reach
  • Wait times exceed VA’s access standards
  • The veteran and their VA provider agree that community care is in the veteran’s best interest

When a veteran receives an official Community Care authorization, the VA pays the provider directly and the veteran does not pay out of pocket.

Why Community Care Matters in Marion County

Marion County is home to veterans from every era of service. Many live in rural areas where:

  • Transportation is limited
  • Broadband access is inconsistent
  • Specialty care requires long-distance travel
  • Chronic conditions go untreated due to access barriers

Community Care helps ensure that rural veterans are not left behind simply because of geography. It brings services closer to home, strengthens continuity of care, and reduces the risk of avoidable hospitalizations or crises.

Village of Grace: A VA‑Approved Provider (But Not Yet in the Community Care Network)

Village of Grace is proud to be an authorized VA provider, meaning:

  • We have passed VA screening
  • We are recognized as a qualified community provider
  • We can serve veterans in certain VA programs

However, authorization is not the same as being part of the Community Care Network (CCN).What this means today

  • Village of Grace is approved by the VA,
  • But not yet contracted through Optum, the CCN administrator for Mississippi (Region 3),
  • Therefore, the VA cannot issue Community Care authorizations to us for residential care,
  • And the VA cannot pay us directly for room, board, and daily living support.

Until CCN contracting is complete, veterans who choose Village of Grace must pay privately or through family, church, or community support. This distinction is often misunderstood—even by VA staff—and we are committed to explaining it clearly to veterans and families.

What Services We Provide to Veterans

Even while we complete the CCN contracting process, Village of Grace continues to serve veterans with:

  • A trauma‑informed, home‑like environment
  • Assistance with daily living (ADLs)
  • Medication reminders and safety monitoring
  • Transportation for errands and appointments
  • Support with VA communication and care coordination
  • Four veteran‑designated beds reserved for those who served

Our mission is to provide stability, dignity, and compassionate care for veterans who need a safe place to call home.

How Veterans Can Access Community Care

To use Community Care, veterans must:

  1. Be enrolled in VA healthcare
  2. Discuss their needs with their VA provider
  3. Receive an official authorization before services begin

Once Village of Grace completes CCN contracting, veterans will be able to use Community Care to cover their residential placement with us. Until then, we continue to support veterans and families in navigating the VA system and understanding their options.
